McFarlane Toys NHL Hockey Sports Picks Checklist + Guide

McFarlanes Hockey Sports Picks

Introduced in 2001 McFarlane Toys hockey figures were the inaugural release of the new Sports Picks brand and their first attempt to tap into the huge Sports market .

McFarlane needn’t have worried though as they were an instant hit and were particularly popular with Canadian Fans and as a result, there is often a mix of players from both the NHL and NHLPA in order to keep both the Canadian and American fans happy. In fact there are often Exclusive Canadian releases and Toys R Us usually has exclusive series at the start of the season.

The choice of hockey for McFarlane Toys’ first release was heavily influenced by the fact that Todd McFarlane, Spawn creator and company founder, was already an avid sports fan and a collector of sports memorabilia as well as being a part-owner of the Edmonton Oilers hockey team.

Each 6-inch figure captures a unique moment in NHL history and each player comes complete with his official team apparel, uniforms, logos, and equipment packaged in the classic McFarlanes clamshell display box.

My favorite figures from this series of action figures are the goalies who look fearsome in their hockey masks and protective gear, guarding the goals like sentinels ready to strike, conjuring up the infamous Michael Meyer’s.

As well as the normal regular action figures there are several one-off Collectors Edition releases, exclusive figures, and the variant (or chase) figures to collect. These action figures have quickly become popular among collectors as well and fans and have led McFarlane into producing action figures for all the four top major league sports.

I have been building a database of action figures since 2004 and I now have more than 40,000 action figure prices, checklists and guides in this database.

This is probably the most comprehensive list of action figures available online and covers virtually every figure that was been produced between 1964-2010.

Each figure listed year, license, manufacturer, title, set and character. For example, 1989 >> Toy Biz >> Spider-man >> The New Animated Series >> Series 8: Spider Wars >> Hydro-Man.

Other information includes accessories, rarity, product number (if available) and a “value”.

When researching for these articles I used many different online and offline retailers and auctions sites to get an average value AT THE TIME of writing the article.

As such they will almost definitely be incorrect as prices and values are in constant flux and change, much like the stock exchange.

Please check my articles and videos on how to grade and value your action figures for up to date prices.
